How to Build a Forex EA on MT5 — Beginner’s Guide to MQL5

You can build an Expert Advisor for MetaTrader 5 with MQL5, but a production-quality trading system requires clear rules, correct MQL5 code, testing and risk controls. Coding the robot is only one part of the process.

What is MQL5?

MQL5 is MetaTrader 5's programming language. It is used to build Expert Advisors, indicators, scripts, utilities and other MT5 applications.

Start with a strategy specification

Before writing code, define the entry rules, exit rules, Stop Loss, Take Profit, position sizing, maximum positions, sessions, spread filters and any break-even or trailing logic. A developer can automate explicit rules; code cannot turn an undefined idea into guaranteed profits.

Build the EA in MetaEditor

1. Open MetaTrader 5 and launch MetaEditor.
2. Create a new Expert Advisor project.
3. Define inputs and initialise required indicators or handles.
4. Implement entry, exit and risk logic.
5. Compile and resolve warnings and errors.
6. Test in MT5 Strategy Tester.

MQL5 differs from MQL4, so examples written for MT4 should not simply be pasted into an MT5 EA. Use the current MQL5 documentation for indicator handles, trade classes and platform functions.

Test before deployment

Backtest across varied periods and inspect drawdown, losing streaks, trade count and sensitivity to costs. Then forward-test on demo under the intended broker conditions. Historical performance does not guarantee future results.
