Complete MT5 EA Setup Guide 2026 — Step-by-Step MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisor Installation Any Broker | PMotive

How to Install an EA on MT5 in 2026: Setup & Troubleshooting

If you are searching for how to install an EA on MT5, this guide covers the exact desktop setup, the most common reasons an Expert Advisor does not trade, and how to choose the correct PMotive EA for your market.

MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisors run inside the desktop terminal on a Windows computer or compatible VPS. The MT5 mobile app can monitor the connected trading account, but it does not run EX5 Expert Advisor files directly.

Need help before you install or buy?

Use this guide first, then ask PMotive on Telegram if you need help confirming your platform, broker symbol or product compatibility.

1. Confirm you have the right MT5 environment

  • MetaTrader 5 desktop installed on Windows or a compatible VPS
  • Your broker account logged into the correct MT5 server
  • The correct symbol available in Market Watch
  • The EA EX5 file and any supplied SET files downloaded
  • A demo account available for testing before live use

Do not assume two brokers use identical symbol names, contract sizes or spreads. For example, Gold might appear as XAUUSD, XAUUSDm or another broker-specific variation.

2. Install the EX5 file

  1. Open MetaTrader 5 desktop.
  2. Go to File → Open Data Folder.
  3. Open MQL5 → Experts.
  4. Copy the EX5 file into the Experts folder.
  5. Return to MT5 and refresh the Expert Advisors section in Navigator, or restart MT5.
  6. Confirm the EA appears under Expert Advisors.

3. Enable automated trading

  1. Open Tools → Options → Expert Advisors.
  2. Enable automated trading.
  3. Only enable DLL imports if the specific EA documentation requires them and you trust the source.
  4. Attach the EA to the intended chart.
  5. Confirm algorithmic trading is enabled in the MT5 toolbar.

If the EA loads but never places a trade, this step and the symbol/timeframe configuration are the first things to check.

4. Load the correct symbol, timeframe and settings

Use the product documentation and supplied settings rather than guessing. Different EAs are built for different markets and can require different chart conditions.

5. Test on demo before live trading

Run the EA on a demo account long enough to confirm that it loads correctly, recognises the intended symbol, responds to the supplied settings and behaves as expected under your broker conditions.

Automated trading can lose money. A successful installation does not mean a strategy will be profitable, and past results do not guarantee future performance.

MT5 EA not trading? Check these common causes

EA loads but does nothing

  • Algorithmic trading is disabled
  • The market is closed or the strategy has no valid setup
  • The wrong symbol or timeframe is open
  • The supplied SET file has not been loaded
  • Broker symbol suffixes do not match the expected symbol
  • Spread or trade filters are blocking entries

EA is missing from Navigator

  • The file was copied into the wrong data folder
  • The file is for MT4 rather than MT5
  • MT5 needs to be refreshed or restarted

EA cannot open trades

  • Insufficient margin
  • Lot size is below or above broker limits
  • The account or symbol does not allow the requested trade type
  • Trading permissions are disabled
  • Broker execution conditions differ from the supplied setup

EA works on desktop but not on mobile

This is expected. The MT5 mobile app is for account monitoring and manual trading. The EA itself must remain running on MT5 desktop or a compatible VPS.

Do you need a VPS?

A VPS is useful if you want the EA to remain active when your personal computer is off or disconnected. Choose a VPS that can run the correct Windows MT5 terminal and keep the trading account connected reliably.

Signals or an EA?

If you prefer to review setups and place trades manually, PMotive also offers Forex, Gold and Index signal plans delivered through Telegram. If you prefer programmed execution, use an Expert Advisor.
